We are off and Running

This was the inaugural meeting of our foursome.  It was great because I haven't cleaned up in awhile and I needed a reason.  A lot of dog hair was swept away.
The cast is
Suzy Levy - art teacher extraordinaire
Margaret Mankin: professional graphic designer
Sandy Wollow: Amazing water colourist now trying to work in acrylics
Suzy Charto: Acrylic artist

The plan for now is to  bring a painting for a critique and then a business idea.

Suzy Levy

Art
This is a commission originally started on burnt sienna.  She is going to lighten up the background as we felt it competed with the girl.

Margaret Mankin

Art: Margaret dragged all her supplies up a mountain and painted au plein air.  She had a lot of problems with the wind and finally had to put her canvases on the ground. She is going to soften the edges on the buildings and get rid of any white.  She is considering adding texture but will do it first in photo shop.

Sandy Wollow:
Art: While she didn't bring us anything to critique, we did discuss an ethical question.  Someone asked her to copy a painting by another artist.  After some talk, we decided that life is too short to do something you think is wrong and do not enjoy.  It is hard to turn down money.  The question is -  can she paint the subject, satisfy the customer, and make it her own?  We will see.

Suzy Charto:
Art: the Visual Art Centre is having a fund raiser and gave out wood boxes to paint.

I asked the group to help me choose a subject that would stand out.  We all decided  on the black telephone.  No dogs or shoes.   They suggested painting on the back which would look like it was framed and would be different. I figured I could do both and see which came out better.

Business:
  • Submission to Cote Saint Luc library
  • learn how to photograph art work

Additional discussion
  • Apply to Yes Montreal for a mentor

Next meeting:  December 4,th - good I don't have to clean up for a month
